The conflict in this story forces the young farmer to make the choices that he made. Such as digging his mother a safe house. The text states in paragraph 17, "The farmer dug a deep hole in the floor of his kitchen and made a small room where he could hide his mother."

If the lord didn't demand for the answers of the riddles then the theme wouldn't have been to respect your elders. The conflict shapes the theme. As the lord states in paragraph 48, "'Even in such a small village there is much wisdom,” he declared, “and its people should be allowed to live in peace.'"

The Conflict

Setting

The conflict affects the setting because the lord made the rule and challenged the village. The word lord gives away what time it took place. Also now lords can not make laws or to make people do tasks like that. According to the author in paragraph 1, "Many long years ago, there lived an arrogant and cruel young lord who ruled over a small village in the western hills of Japan."

The Wise Old Woman-Assessment

Lord Higa made everyone in the young farmer's village solve riddles for him or he would conquer the village. He also made a rule for when people are over the age pd seventy one they are sent to the mountains to be left there to die. The text states in paragraph 2, "“I have no use for old people in my village,” he said haughtily. “They are neither useful nor able to work for a living. I therefore decree that anyone over seventy-one must be banished from the village and left in the mountains to die.”"

The Plot of the Story

Plot

When Lord Higa makes the rule about being sent to the mountains at the age seventy one. Then the old woman turns seventy one and is sent to the mountains. The young farmer could not leave his mother there alone so he kept her in a small room. The story states in paragraph 6, "However, as the years went by, the mother grew older, and before long she reached the terrible age of seventy-one."

If the Lord never made the rule then the young farmer would have never wanted to deceive the king. Also he wouldn't have had to because the rule would have never existed. The evidence for this statement is in paragraph 7, "'If only I could somehow deceive the cruel lord,” the farmer thought. But there were records in the village books and everyone knew that his mother had turned seventy-one."
