Used for finding experiment details and procedure
This was very unethical because being gay or lesbian isn't a disease or has a cure so what they thought would "cure" them actually would do nothing and possibly kill them.
What Did We Learn From This Experiment
chief psychiatrist at the Voortrekkerhoogte military hospital during the 1970s
This experiment taught us homosexuality was not a disease and could not be treated. This was a cruel experiment and after this people started to accept homosexuality
Colonel in the South African Defense Force
Experiment Results
Ran involuntary experiments on homosexuals to try to "cure" them
The experiments results were unconvincing they rarely cured the patients of this "disease" patients and therapists both did not like the results they got from the experiment. After the results doctor removed the thought of homosexuality being a disease.
The Aversion Project was a campaign to cure homosexuality in people. The project took place in South Africa in the 1970's-1980's. The project was conducted by Aubrey Levin, a former professor of clinical psychiatry and former colonel in the South African defense force.
What Could Have Been Done To Make It Ethical
What was the procedure
The unethical behavior was not needed to get results. The people who conducted the experiment could have done the testing in a different manner. They could have used a more question based experiment asking why they felt this way and what made them feel this way or they could have just accepted their opinion and let them live there life.
Patients would get shocked, giving drugs or hormone treatments or even a brutal sex change.
