Japanese Drifting Culture

What is drifting?

Here is an example video

Drifting - is a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels, while maintaining control from entry to exit of a corner

How does this relate to

pop culture?

THE END

BBC's Top Gear

Just like Tsuchiya, it is very popular in Japan to race and drift in Japan mountain roads (hence this giant background picture of one of those roads)

In America, movies such as "Fast and Furious 3 Tokyo Drift" have been inspired by the culture of drifting and Japan street racing

Please excuse the 90s porno music...

Drifting and the well known Toyota Corolla Sprinter AE86 inspired a manga (the Japanese version of a comic) called Initial D that debuted in 1995. It was later turned into an animated show in 1999 and both the comics and the show are ongoing. In 2005 it was turned into a live action film in Hong Kong.

Example of influence on car industry
