In the concentration camps they can't even get proper food for them to to have 'life' in the sense that they won't have enough energy to be able to move around. The author also states "Lock in cages...arms out-stretched." making it clear enough to tell readers the condition that they were treated was horrible for protesting.
The cause of the concentration camps was because blacks were protesting against bigotry, "...echoes of Malcolm words...there must be black unity." This tell readers that there was a protest that was in motion when the blacks had got arrested or beaten when it occurred. In the concentration camps not only men were in there but so was children and women, babies crying or screaming. The concentration camps were made of concrete so that it wouldn't be easy to break down, and barb wires at the top so it wouldn't be easy to climb.
