Pain Scale

The Gate-control Theory

Example

-Shut finger in the door

-pain signal go to spinal cord

-depending if the signal goes through small/larger fibers the gate would open or remain closed

- how many pain messages (intensity of the pain) get to the brain

- sympathetic nervous system

- Chemicals reduced to stop pain are released to the brain and spinal cord

What is the Gate-Control Theory?

Opening of the Gate

- when body tissue is damaged pain receptors travel to the spinal cord where a "neural gate" is.

- controls the transmission of pain impulses to the brain

- Patrick Wall and Ronald Melzack in 1965

Work Cited

- smaller fibers open the gate

- smaller fibers carry nociceptive information

- more pain when the gate is open

Understand Psychology

Closed Gate

- Larger fibers close the gate

- Larger fibers carry non-nociceptive information

- Not as much pain as to when the gate is open
