Catawba River Basin

Current Water Quality

Citations

84% of the water is currently impaired due to human activities all over the basin. The Catawba River is especially bad since it is affected the most.

  • Organize crews to clean up litter on the streets.
  • Make pollution in non certified places punishable by jail time.
  • Make sure your car is clean and not leaking oil.
  • Don't waste water.
  • If you have trash, find a trash can. Do not use the ground.

3 Different Threats

  • Fecal Coliform
  • Sewage treatment plants are having leaks and this is seeping into our drinking water
  • Mercury
  • Mercury is being carried from power plants to the waters of our basin.
  • Sedimentation
  • New developments have loose dirt before landscaped and built upon and rain water takes this dirt into the basin's water supply making it less healthy

1 Major Threat

Threats to Water Quality

Wildlife and Vegetation

Pollution is a major threat. Not only are chemicals being poured in but sewage too. This makes the water very unfit for life. There are 550 certified pollution dupin places but many more spots are being used. This is killing the plants and animals that live here while harming us at the same time. We must stop the pollution of the Catawba River Basin however we can.

  • In this basin there are many types of plants such as hydrylla, spider lillies, and Spigelia marilandica,
  • Some of the animals include Edmund's Snaketail Butterfly, grandfather mountain Crayfish, and the heelsplitter mussel.
  • Lake James State Park, Crowders Mountain State Park, Lake Norman State Park, and South Mountains State Park are some of the places you can go to see these plants and animals

Human Impact

Humans have one of the biggest impacts on this

basin. Not all of them are negative but a lot are.

We are good by picking up litter and trying to keep it clean but that isn't enough. We dump so much waste into the river and on the ground all over the basin that our water quality is horrible. We also waste lots of

much needed water.
