1957 Ruskin Tornado

This could happen again, but it is hard to predict when. The tornado that hit Ruskin was classified as an F-5 tornado and covered over 70 miles from Williamsburg, Kansas to Raytown, Missouri.

over 531 people were injured and 33 died in Missouri and six in Kansas that night. The death eventually climbed to 39, some sources reported 44 as a result of the tornado.

The tornado smashed stores, churches, banks and 825 homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed

1957 has gone down in history 42 tornadoes, 56 deaths and 310 injured at a cost of more than $65 million

Overall this tornado devastated Kansas City, Missouri. Many homes were destroyed throughout this disaster. This had many effects on the city and on all the people living here. The weather could have been perfect for this tornado to happen. It is also very possible that this tornado could happen again. Ruskin homeowners rebuilt and reclaimed their homes in the months that came after. A year later, on May 18, 1958, the Ruskin Heights Monument was built to be dedicated to those who died. Trees were planted behind the monument for each fatality during the Ruskin Heights tornado.
