Although the event ended a long time ago, Tim is still obsessed by the image of the man he killed. Tim's feeling of regret shows that his action of getting in the military to fight against Vietnamese is not voluntary. Tim represents the soldiers who were forced to join meaningless wars. The wars bring nothing but agony to not only soldiers but other people.

Think before we act.

"Sometimes I forgive myself, other times I don't. In the ordinary hours of life I try not to dwell on it, but now and then, when I'm reading a newspaper or just sitting alone in the room, I'll look up and see the young man out of the fog."

  • To live somewhere
  • To look at something for a long time
  • To think or talk a lot about something, especially something it would be better to forget

The author is obsessed by the dead of the Vietnamese man. The event keeps appear in his mind although he wants to forget it and forgive himself.

  • The morning fog: where the Vietnamese emerged. In contrast with his soft emergence that is compared as if he was part of the fog, the man left such powerful memory to the author that makes him dwell on for so many years.
  • The grenade: tool which caused instant death of the young man. The author dwells upon his instinctive action of throwing the grenade and killing the man.
  • The war stories: the author's daughter saw he wrote many war stories and wondered if he had killed anybody. The author lied. The man he killed became his obsession and motivation to write
  • Dead body: the author can't forgive himself for what he had done. He hopes to go back in time to stop himself.
