Getting to Know Your Topics

Speak Your Truth

6 Word Stories

Racism: “Lost Voices” By Darius Simpson and Scout Bostley

Mental Health: “Explaining My Depression To My Mother” By Sabrina Benaim

High School Experience: “High School Training Ground” By Malcolm London

1.Tim Burton was right when he said every good story has a beginning, a middle, and an end, although not necessarily in that order

2.I love snow days on the couch watching good movies.

3.Whenever I get on a stage I always get incredibly nervous which greatly inhibits my ability to keep it cool.

4.I will forever and always undoubtedly and confidently love the Twilight movies/ books.

5.I absolutely love “dad” jokes.

Everyone is going to write one 6 word story/ poem for each of the topics.

Racism: You have to be taught intolerance.

Mental Health: Weather is not bipolar, I am.

High School Experience: I should've gone to bed earlier.

Here's What Seems to Always Happen With This Activity

1.Someone has the exact same or something very similar to something on your list

2.Someone else has the complete opposite of yours

3.Someone else has something you’ve never heard of before

4.Someone has something you thought you knew everything about, but they have a new perspective of looking at it.

Choose Your Topic !!

Picking Your Groups

After you’ve chosen your topic, create a list of why you choose the topics, key points you (might) want to address in one or many pieces, and finally, what impact you (might) want to leave your audience.

This whole lesson is supposed to mean something, so don't pick your group just because you're best friends. Pick a group you know you can write some excellent pieces with. Also you are picking a group with others who choose the same topic as you so that should make it a little easier.

  • Each group has 3 members
  • Each member is going to write an individual piece on your topic before you can begin working on the group piece
