fake light

The moon itself does not actually give out light but is illuminated by the sun. This could be associated with the suppression of real truth within the play. Is Roberto really the torturer? He does not genuinely ask for forgiveness; he gives a confession which may be falsified. Even at the end of the play the audience are restrained from this truth.

feminism

the moon is most linked with the female cycle, it well known to be linked to each other. The idea of feminism is seen in the play as victims take charge in the traumatic experiences faced. Also, feminism is explored in the means of emasculating the play. For example, Roberto is tied up with Paulina's female underwear. It is further explored with Paulina's control in the play being the only woman controlling two men.

rebirth

The cyclic nature of the moon represents rebirth. This can be connected to the play due to the change in government from democracy to dictatorship. It can also be significant because it links with the character Paulina and how she wants to carry on with her life: forgetting the years of her torture.

illumination

The whole play itself is a journey to attempt to reveal the truth. The moon is the most illuminated object in the sky. The story tries to discover the "real real truth" as Paulina tortures Roberto.

Dorfman also uses his play to as a way of closure for the people affected. Acceptance of the truth is seen by audience reflection

The Moon

the sea

instability

the sea represents instability as it is constantly changing. The sea carries along with it elements found in the water. The sea is never still and consists of many elements.

Instability can be most linked to Paulina's character as her past experiences have made both her life and mind unstable. She is not seen to be in 'the right state of mind'

"Paulina please give me that gun"= Paulina is put under the impression she is unable to think for herself. Her emotions remain unstable in the play.

cleansing

The sea, a nature of water, represents cleansing, purification and healing of emotional issues. This is of importance because one of the plays main themes is forgiveness and atonement. All characters are trying to forget and move on with what happened during the times of Chile's dictatorship. Paulina tries to cleanse herself in a way of revealing the truth

anger

"sounds of the sea" suggests that the waves are crashing hard. This conveys Paulina's anger towards Roberto. This may also represent the anger of the victims towards 'New Chile' as they ignore the experiences faced by many.

setting

dorfman's use of the sea and moon present the idea of isolation, a very important aspect of how the characters act in the surrounding.
