What is Cross Cultural Awareness?

Current Research

Cultural awareness is the ability to be aware of one's own cultural values and beliefs.

Cross cultural awareness is the ability to aware of others' cultural values and beliefs.

(Quappe and Cantatore 2005)

  • Social networking is being utilized to gain understanding of one's own culture as well as become more globally literate (Carano 2009).

  • Higher education institutions are trying to better prepare pre-service teachers and faculty to teach in cross cultural and diverse environments (Miller and Mikulec 2014)

Impact on Students

  • Increased cultural competence
  • Encourages openness to diversity
  • Students develop more cultural sensitivity
  • Students are more prepared for diverse or multicultural environments.
  • Student gain a sense of respect for other cultures

(Kratzke and Bertolo 2013)

Integration

"Fully integrated cultural knowledge may affect global changes in human service delivery" (King, Sims, & Osher)

  • Teach students to value diversity by being respectful and accepting of others' differences
  • Utilize cultural self-assessment
  • Integrate knowledge of culture in every possible area
  • Utilize materials that reflect multicultural groups
  • Adapt activities to include relevant cultural materials
  • Allow students opportunities to share their cultural knowledge with classmates

(King, Sims, & Osher)

Certain attitudes can help connect cultures:

  • Admit that you're not a cultural expert
  • Withhold judgements
  • Demonstrate feelings of empathy
  • Be careful when making assumptions
  • Be comfortable with not always being in control
  • Recognize and celebrate diversity

(Quappe and Cantatore 2005)

Standalone Unit of Study Ideas

  • Provide assignments that allow students to demonstrate their own culture.
  • Students could choose various cultures and complete research projects to present to the class.
  • Invite guest speakers and readers to teach the class about different cultures.

Challenges

  • It can be hard to overcome one's own cultural values, beliefs, and traditions that have been learned unconsciously.
  • It requires stepping out of one's cultural comfort zone.
  • Misunderstandings can result from a lack of cultural awareness

(Quappe and Cantatore 2005)

As teachers it is important to exercise cultural awareness and sensitivity to avoid offending students and their families.
