Nancy's son Shane grew up to be an alcoholic and had serious phsycotic tendencies attributed to the way he was raised. He even murdered someone right in front of his mom when he was only 14

Nancy did face some consequences of her actions, taking the fall for Shane after he murdered Pilar. She went to prison for three years. However; she didn't learn anything from her time there. After she got out, she:

  • Started selling weapons literally 2 hours after her release.
  • Ignored her family who was desperately trying to get ahold of her.
  • Attempted to win back custody of her third son when she was continuing with her illegal behavior.
  • Constantly ignored her probation officer and showed up late to many of her legal meetings, almost getting herself thrown back into prison.

Because of the details I have explained, Nancy was a true anti hero. Her narcissism and how it affected everyone around her made her an ideal character for the viewers to root for her in even the worst situation that she brought upon herself.

Nancy was a terrible mother, friend and wife.

She cared for no one but herself, ratting out one of her closest buisness partners at the first sign of trouble.

The Black Widow

Nancy can be seen as a black widow. Here is my theory as to why:

  • Female Black Widow's eat their mates after sex (Wiki). Nancy had four husbands, and all of them were killed one way or another.
  • She traps men in her web of lies, luring them in with her sex appeal and then to their death.

How the media exploits her

Nancy is harshly judged in the media because of her awful parenting style. Yet any other male anti hero you see in television gets no backlash because of how bad of a parent they are. So, Nancy's character is judged based on the sexist theory of how a mother should act, instead of the complicated and talented character she actually is.

Some of Nancy's Irresponsible Behaviors:

  • Marries an FBI agent while she is a drug dealer.
  • Lets her 16 year old son deal weed and start a drug buisness with his 30 year old girlfriend.
  • Selling weapons and buying weed the day she got out of prison.
  • Dealing drugs in general.
  • Geting involved with and marrying a known drug lord.

Nancy as an anti hero

Nancy can be seen as an anti hero because of her villan tendencies, but her character is so lovable that she is easily forgiven with everything she does. This video clip will give some insight as to how she is labeled as an anti hero.

Nancy Botwin as an Anti hero

(3:38)

What is an Anti Hero?

According to Meriam Webster, an anti hero is "a protagonist or not able figure who is considerably lacking in heroic qualities"(Webster). Basically, it is the main character of the show who has a lot of flaws and does majorly stupid stuff, but viewers tend to root for them anyways.

Silas, Shane and Andy

Andy

Andy is the brother of Judah (Nancy's dead husband) and the closest thing that Nancy has to a friend. Silas (15) and Shane (10) are Nancy's two children.

Nancy Botwin

Created by Emily Fortier

Nancy is the main character. She is bold, sexy, charming and definitely a thrill seeker. She is constantly on the run from the trouble she gets herself into, and so is her family who follow her along this crazy journey.

Weeds

Weeds is about an average suburban family in Agrestic, California. It follows the life of the Botwin's after the sudden death of Nancy's (the main character) husband, and how she resorts to selling marijuana as a steady income. The family consists of...
