In ancient Greece, landmark buildings were very important and continue to be in present day. Today, the Parthenon and other significant structures bring tourism but in ancient days they were temples of worship. Even though the use of the buildings has changed, the architectural structures are still a large part of life in Greece.

In this presentation, you will learn about the differences and similarities between ancient Greece and modern Greece.

As in many cultures, religion is an important part of Greek society. In ancient Greece, the Greeks believed in multiple gods and their old religion is now known as Greek Mythology. Today, much of Greece is dominated by the Greek Orthodox Church.

Greek cuisine has remained basically the same. In the past, three foods were particularity important to life in Greece: olive oil, wine, and bread. Present day brings these same foods to almost every table. All three foods are used in dishes and eaten by themselves.

The final similarity between ancient and modern Greece is the language. The predominant language in Ancient and modern days is Greek. Today the Greek alphabet is still used in some cases and our modern alphabet is not drastically different.

Another similarity, are Greek social habits. In modern times, a dinner party is said to have lasted for hours upon hours, as did dinners in ancient Greece. Eating together was considered civilized and this is what the Greeks believed separated them from the barbarians. The Greeks lived by the historian, Plutarch philosophy, "We do not sit at the table to eat...but to eat together."

The houses in Ancient Greece were much different from houses today. Present day houses are very modern with all of the modern conveniences the industrial revolution brought to the world. With the availability of resources there has been a shift from mostly stone houses to wood structures. Ancient Greece houses had open courtyards and many rooms. They were built to keep the house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Some homes still maintain this ancient style.

Ancient Grecian wardrobe has drastically changed; currently every day clothes are similar to those found in America. However, they used to wear hand-dyed tunics, robes, and cloaks. These are very different from modern day clothes that are mass produced and usually not as formal.
