Battle of Olustee

Battles

  • The Battle of Olustee was fought on February 20, 1864.
  • Approximately 700 Union soldiers died at this battle.
  • 500 more of those soldiers were missing.

  • How many battles were there?
  • There were around four battles.
  • The largest battle was the one we just talked about. The battle of Olustee.
  • The battle of Santa Rosa Island on October 9th, 1861.
  • General Richard Anderson crossed from the mainland to the island with 1,200 men in two steamers to surprise the Union camps and capture Fort Pickens.
  • He landed north beach about 4 miles from Fort Pickens and divided his command into 3 columns and after proceeding about three miles north and suprised the Union camps and Fort Pickens.
  • General Anderson then got a defensive strategy to try to get everyone out of the camps. Col. Harvey brown for the Union got back up then went back at the Confederate soldiers who reembarked and return to the mainland.
  • There were multiple battles in Florida in the Civil War.
  • They were bigger battles of the Civil War many died or were wounded.

  • Union or Confederate?
  • Florida was on the Confederate side during the war.
  • But when they joined some of Florida's major ports were occupied by Union soldiers.
  • So the Confederate soldiers had to clear out these ports and get them back.
