Be Decisive

How does this tie in with confidence?

Being decisive shows that you are a confident person. Being able to make decisions and sticking to them shows people that you are confident with your abilities and that you know what you are doing. You stick to your choices and are confident that you are making the right decision.

As a leader, you’re going to have to make decisions for your group. Sometimes, you’ll have to make decisions you won’t like, but someone has to make the hard decisions. When making decisions, stick to them. Be decisive! No one likes a leader who can’t make up his or her mind.

How to be decisive:

  • Be informed
  • Plan ahead
  • Weigh your options (Pros and Cons)
  • Know what you want
  • Think before you speak
  • Be confident with your decision!

Confidence

Ain't no shame in your leadership game

Do Your Best

Lead by Example

When you try your best and put in your best performance, you are setting a good example. As a leader, you need to be confident in what you do, and to be confident, you need to put in your best effort. You do not want to regret your actions and say, “I could have tried harder.”

How to try your best

When you succeed, celebrate!

  • Set goals and plan what you want to achieve
  • Motivate yourself
  • Practice
  • Develop different skills; try new things
  • Don’t expect to be the best at everything

Do not be afraid to celebrate your accomplishments. By acknowledging your successes, you will build your confidence. Celebration motivates you and encourages you to put in your best talents and skills.

It may be easy to listen, learn, and know everything there is to be a leader, but the most important task is applying what you learn to your own life. If you fail at this, you ultimately fail as a leader.

Be Ambitious

Being confident is a quality that can take you far, but being an example of confidence can take those around you even farther. Being a confident leader means influencing the people around you to also become better people and better leaders.

So, how do you become ambitious?

  • Believe in yourself because no one can do that for you
  • Think about what you want to devote yourself to
  • Keep your goals reasonable, realistic, and reachable
  • Always think about what you can improve on
  • Be persistent and patient with your goals

Ambition is a strong desire to achieve success. If you have a goal that you are willing to work hard for in order to reach, you are ambitious.

How is ambition connected to confidence?

If you are ambitious, you know and understand what it is that you want to achieve, and you will work hard towards achieving success until you are where you want to be. Therefore, you are confident in your work, which means you are confident in yourself.

Know Yourself

Confidence starts with yourself. You cannot be confident if you do not know yourself, recognizing not only your strengths but also your weaknesses.

Have confidence in yourself before others can put their confidence in you as a leader!

  • Be aware and proud of your strengths
  • Acknowledge your weaknesses
  • Know your limits
  • Confidence is control

What is confidence?

Dictionary.com defines it as "belief in oneself and one's powers or abilities; self-confidence; self-reliance; assurance."

Encouraging Others

Accept Criticism

Activity

List what you like about yourself.

  • Take every critique as constructive as it can be
  • Don’t let it discourage you or put you down
  • Instead, use it to better yourself
  • Look at it in a positive light

How does it build confidence?

Learn to accept it

  • Well, it can only lower your self-esteem if you let it
  • It all depends on how you look and interpret the criticism
  • Take the criticism and treat it as a motivation for you to improve
  • You’ll be surrounded by criticism throughout your life
  • You have to accept it and utilize it to your advantage

Ways to encourage others:

As a leader, it is more than just being confident in yourself, but also to be able to instill confidence to those around you. In order to do so, we must encourage others to see the great skills and potentials hidden in themselves, and the many accomplishments that they are capable of achieving. In return, not only will encouraging them help them gain confidence in themselves, but mutually, you gain confidence in yourself.

  • “Words” are the most powerful weapon
  • acknowledge their abilities
  • say what you mean
  • hope v. false hope
  • Push them to succeed
  • Listen and look attentively to what they have to say
  • Be a confident, role-model
  • Put a smile on your face and theirs
