How is geometry used in the medical field?

By Lacey Miller and Jarrett Conant

Radiology

Geometric Concepts

How does geometry play a role?

Parallel techniques using a film holder.

X-ray film techniques

Geometrical skills can be applied when reconstructing organs, bones and any other item of the human body. The object and film should be parallel and the beam should be perpendicular to the object and film.

There are certain techniques that are used for projection (paralleling techniques, and bisecting angle techniques).

Geometric Concepts

A radiologist uses technology such as x-rays, ultrasounds, MRIs, nuclear imaging and much more. To begin your career as one, you will first need to have a bachelor's degree, and then go into medical school for another 8 years. Undergraduate students can optionally work or volunteer in medical settings to gain experience. If a high school student wishes to become one, they should take courses that focus on chemistry, biology, math, and anatomy.

Who is that? How can I become one?

A dental hygienist will have to look at shapes and dimensions of teeth, count/name the teeth and also how to identify planes on the teeth. One of the tools that they use is a dental mirror, which reflects and magnifies the image of the tooth/teeth that are inside the patient's mouth for a closer view.

A Dental Hygienist cleans teeth, examines the patient for signs of oral diseases, takes x-rays of teeth and sometimes apply fluoride treatments to patients. Most importantly, a dental hygienist teaches their patients how to maintain good oral hygiene. If someone wants to become a dental hygienist, he/she must have at least an Associate’s Degree in dental hygiene. If a high school student is interested in becoming one, they should take chemistry, biology, and mathematics courses.
