In the data it can be seen that the tablets dissolved faster in the water that boiled, but the amount of time that the water boiled did not have a big affect on the dissolving rate. With this data I can conclude that the higher the temperature the quicker the tablets will dissolve. They will reaction time will be decreased because the heated water has more energy to break apart the particlds in the Alka-Seltzer tablets. The less energy the particles have the more time it will take them to dissolve.

Materials and Methods

The Alka-Seltzer tablets dissolved fastest when they were put into the boiling water, rather than the room temperature water or the water that was in the freezer.

The materials used in the experiment were a measuring cup, regular Alka-Seltzer tablets, a pot, and a stopwatch.

Method:

1. Pour two cups of water into a pot and place it on medium high heat. Once the water boils start the timer for three minuets. After three minuets place one tablet into the water, and start the timer. Stop the timer when the tablet is completely dissolved.

2. Repeat step one, but let the water boil for 5 minuets.

3. Repeat step one, but let the water boil for 10 minuets.

4. Pour two cups of water into a pot and place it in the freezer. Once it is in the freezer start the timer for three minuets. After three minuets take the water out of the freezer. Put one tablet in the water and start the timer. Stop the timer when the tablet is completely dissolved.

5. Repeat step four, but leave the water in the freezer for 5 minuets.

6. Repeat step four, but leave the water in the freezer for 10 minuets.

7. Repeat each time increment two more times.

Introduction

One time when I was at a summer camp, we played a game with water guns and Alka-Seltzer tablets. We tied the tables onto a necklace so that when you were shot with the water gun it would dissolve and you were out. I started to wonder if the temperature of the water would affect the dissolving rate of the tablet, so I set up an experiment to test this.

Does temperature affect the dissolving rate of Alka-Seltzer tablets?

Abstract

The following power point will answer the question “Does temperature affect the dissolving rate of Alka-Seltzer?” It will also show and discuss the results from the experiment I used to answer the question. In the experiment two cups of water were boiled or put in the freezer for different amounts of time, and then an Alka-Seltzer tablet was added to the water. The control in the experiment was a tablet dissolving in two cups of room temperature water. After three trials of each time of the water boiling or being in the freezer I concluded that the higher the temperature the quicker the tablets dissolve.
