Egypt is one of the earliest advanced civilizations. Astronomy and legends went hand in hand, but the stars and patterns went beyond legend.

In Ancient Egypt astronomers were priests. Their main duty was to calculate the time of the Nile flood, which occurred at the summer solstice when the bright star Sirius rose before the sun. What the priest did was very important in Egyptian society. The Egyptians believed the gods lived in the temples. Only the priests were allowed to enter the temple, which was sacred area, and approach the statue representing the god or goddess. The people could pray at the gate or in the court to the Pharaoh who went between the people and gods. People also brought offerings such as geese, cranes, goats etc.

The Pyramids

Ancient Egypt payed very close attention to the stars. They went as far as building temples and pyrimds to have astronomical positions. They alined then with the star B Scorpii's rising direction.

Solar Calender

The Egyptians were the first to develop a solar calender,using a fixed point where the sunrose, reappearane of the Dog Star-Sirius, or Sothis-in the eastern sky, which coincided with the annual flooding of the Nile River. The Egyptians developed the first recorded solar calendar in about 3000 BC. Year began in July when the star Sirius rose exactly in line with the rising sun Heliacal Rising.

Solar calender description and use :

-predicted agriculare seasons and Nile floodings.

- 12 months with 30 days each

- Month divided into three 10 day weeks

- Five festival days added to the end of the year

- 365 days year

The Sphinx of Giza

The Sphinx of Giza is a symbol that has represented the essence of Egypt for thousands of years. 12,500 years ago the Sphinx lined up perfectly with the sun rising on the spring equinox.

At the same time, the Nile would have corresponded with the Milky Way.

Amon-Ra:The Sun God

The Egyptian god, Amon Ra is the main god,or the sun god in this religion. He defeats the god of darkness and storms, every night to become the sun and bring the day to earth. This is their beleif of how and why the sun rose and the moon set.
