Reginald was part of the Gunditjmara people. As previously stated, Reginald's Mother died when he was young and so he was taken into care by his Grandmother. Unfortunately, his father died shortly after. Saunders married Dorothy Mary Banfield in 1944 and had three children, but this marriage was not a success, ending in 1953. He was then living with Patricia Montgomery and they were to be married on November 17 1979, but they later parted.
Reginald Saunders was born on 7 August 1920 to parents Christopher Gerorge Saunders and Mable Saunders in Framlingham Aboriginal reserve, just outside Purnim, Victoria. Reginald, along with his brother Harry were brought up by their maternal Grandmother after their Mother died in 1924, though they were still close to their Father. Saunders attended Lake Condah State School and briefly attended Hamilton High School. For his own leisure, Saunders enjoyed boxing, cricket and football. After resigning from the army in 1954 Saunders moved to Sydney and became the captain of his local cricket team and president of a sub-branch of the RSL. He then moved to Canberra in 1969 and was employed as a liaison officer at the Department of Aboringinal Affairs, staying there unil his retirement in 1981. Sadly, Saunders past away at the age of 69 from heart disease on March 2nd 1990, in Canberra.
Saunders fought in
Reginald Saunders was the first Aboriginal Australian to be commissoned as an officer in the Australian Army. Saunders worked as a saw miller before he joined the Army, but could imagine working in poor countries, helping fight and protect the citizens. At the sudden start of World War II, Saunders signed up to the AIF on 24th of April 1940. After his training Saunders was sent to the Middle East to be a reinforcement of the 2/7th battalion. When Saunders went to New Guinea, he was now a sergeant. From then on, Saunders went to help other countries during time of war.
