In 2002, the Olympic torch was running through Juneau Alaska.18 year old student Joseph Fredrick along with his school attended the event. Fredrick was suspended for displaying a sign that read "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" in an attempt to get on television.
Frederick sued claiming that his right to free speech had been infringed upon.
His case was thrown out by the federal district court but, on appeal, the ninth circuit reversed and concluded that in fact his free speech rights had been infringed upon.
A group of high school students in Des Moines Iowa, in protest of the Vietnam war attended school wearing black arm bands. The students were suspended because the administrators discovered this prior to the students attendance on the day of the protest and suspended the students.
The students decided to sue because they felt their freedom of protest had been violated.
The court found in favor of the students stating that students had the right to expression and speech under the first amendment as long as it didn't cause material disruption or invade the right of others.
