This whale was probably able to get to California because of global warming. What global warming causes is that glaciers melt and the sea level rises. After The body of the fish was almost dead, the current dragged him to California.
In the day of October 17 2013 a female saber-toothed whale was found in the coast of California. When it came ashore it was barely alive.
