Austria had to accept part of the blame of the war, together with Germany and its allies.

It made Austria an independent country of Hungary and recognized the independence of Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Poland and Hungary.

Armed forces

Territories

Austria's army was strictly reduced to 30.000 men. She couldn't have air or naval forces.

Introduction

Austria had to give most of its wealthiest and more powerful territories to different European countries. It became a little, montanious, with no access to the sea country.

  • Trentino, South Tyrol, Trieste and Istria were all handed over to Italy along with some of the Dalmatian islands.
  • Bohemia and Moravia were delivered to the New State of Czechoslovakia.
  • Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, to the New State of Yugoslavia
  • Galicia was given to Poland.

League of Nations

The covenant of the League of Nations stated that Austria was not invited to join the league.

This treaty, was signed by the victorious allies of the First World War and Austria.

It was signed the 10th of September, 1919, at the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France

Anyway, in 1938, Germany annexed Austria to the league.

Conclusion

To conclude, we could say that the Treaty of Saint Germain established many statements in Austria. Although in some aspects the treaty may seem to be fair, the unfairness of the clauses of war-guilt, territory, the covenant of the League of Nations, and the prohibition of Austria reuniting with Germany politically or economically, clearly show the treaty was unfair.

Alliances

Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France

Country

Austria was forbidden to ever form a political or economical alliance because this was a great threat to European peace.

Austria was prohibited to use its first choice name for the new republic

"German-Austria", and Austria and Germany were forbidden to ever unite politically or economically.

Signing ceremony, Austrian chancellor Renner addressing the delegates.

She had to adopt only the name of Austria.

TREATY OF SAINT GERMAIN

Reparations

Austria had to pay the government of Italy, the Serb-Croat-Slovene Government and, the Romanian Government with a great amount of specific healthy animals for the next 30 years after the treaty was signed.

Anyway, thanks to the unstable economy of Austria, reparations were never paid.
