The Anicare Model provides a comprehensive assessment of and intervention for animal cruelty for adults and children. Using a cognitive-behavioral approach with direct interventions emphasizing the client's need to acknowledge accountability for their behavior.

Animal Abuse: Non-accidental, socially unacceptable behavior that causes pain, suffering or distress to and/or the death of animal.

McMillian(2005) focused attention on the emotional abuse of animals, a form of maltreatment that clearly falls w/n the definition of abuse, but has not been studied.

Forensic psychology acknowledge the significance of assessing animal abuse in understanding psychopathy (Bower, 2006)

The issue of mandatory reporting, by veterinarians and the mental health community is required in some states and under debate in others (Babcock & Neihsl, 2006; Jack, 2005)

Tertiary Prevention- Involves major efforts at intervention & Tx. Of those already demonstrating socially unacceptable & illegal behavior.
