Zacharias Janssen:

Looking into the Past

Support System

The microscope was invented to view objects farther than the naked eye. Scientists wanted to see all the details of objects and needed a way to view what we cannot see regularly. With the invention of the microscope, thanks to Zacharias Janssen, we are able to see objects 100x with a compound light microscope. Janssen was the first to start the trend of microscopes, revolutionizing the way we view objects.

Drives for Invention

I believe Janssen's drive for inventing the microscope was spurred by him constantly working with lenses. Janssen made a living by making spectacles. With being around the glass every day, he most likely got creative with his work. Janssen pondered on the thought of magnifying objects farther than the magnifying glass.

Bio

Zacharias Janssen is believed to be the first inventor the compound microscope. Janssen worked as a spectacle maker in Holland when he created the first model of the microscope. Janssen's model was created by placing lenses at the base of a main brass tube., held up by a tripod. The lenses connected to the eyepieces serve as the magnification elements. This model was able to magnify objects 9x their appearance to the naked eye. The microscope was able to solve the issue of not being able to see farther than the naked eye. Scientists couldn’t see all the cells and other structures within organisms. Now scientists are able to see 1000x the appearance of an organism’s surface area.
