Mandela is born as Rolihlahla Mandela in Mvezo, South Africa.

Nelson Rohilahla Mandela dies at 95 in his home in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Co-founds the African National Congress Youth League; marries Evelyn Mase.

His father dies of tuberculosis when he's only twelve years old.

  • 1990 - ANC is unbanned and he is released from prison.
  • 1993 - Awarded Nobel Peace prize
  • 1994 - Votes for the first time in his life at age 76.

Elected first president of democratic South Africa.

Defiance Campaign begins;

  • Elected president of African National Congress
  • Arrested for the Suppression of Communism Act
  • Convicted for nine months in prison
  • Opens South Africa's first black law firm

Nelson Mandela's legacy is that of civil rights. He worked to overthrow the apartheid government despite facing life in prison and an unjust system.

  • 1948 - Elected national secretary of ANCYL.
  • 1951 - Elected president of ANCYL.

Mandela attends primary school in Qunu and recieves the name 'Nelson' from a school teacher.

  • 1956 - Arrested for treason but is acquitted
  • 1960 - ANC is banned
  • 1962 - Leaves country to get military training and to get support for the ANC

Arrested and sentenced to five years in prison for incitement. He altogether spent 27 years in prison.

  • 1964 - Convicted for life in prison
  • 1939 - Enrolls at University College of Fort Hare
  • 1940 - Expelled a year later for activism
  • 1941 - He and his cousin escape from arranged marriages

He earns a job at a mining facility

  • 1942 - Goes to University of South Africa to get a Bachelor's Degree in law; begins to attend African National Congress (An activist group)
  • 1943 - Graduates BA at UNISA
