Analysis at Elite

Analysis at Foundation

In Football there are many different types of analysis performance. Some of these are:

  • ProZone
  • Dartfish
  • Video analysis

At primary school there is limited access to analysis equipment due to the vast cost of technology such as ProZone and Dartfish, which is not viable for school that already are on a tight budget for every subject.

Even if they did have this equipment I believe that it wouldn’t be very useful as a teaching method, because at the primary age the children are not likely to require complete tasks that would require this in depth level of analysis. The skills they manly a required to perform are the basis skills such as catching, throwing and kicking a ball.

Due to the cost and usefulness of analysis equipment as well as the number of students that are taught in 1 lesson, this many two analysing techniques are visual and verbal teaching.

Visual – This is showing the key teaching points through demonstration by the teacher or students, it can also be done by videos.

Verbal – This is explaining the teaching point by verbally talking though giving clear instructions and explanations

Both of these techniques are given together as one, because everyone learns best in different, some people find it difficult learning in just one way so it gives all the children a chance of understanding what they are being taught.

Age

To maintain playing sport at as you get older you will need to meet the 5 criteria to be successful as you age. This are CONFIDENCE, PREVIOUS TRAINING, ABILITY LEVEL, DIET and MOTIVATION. If you fail to meet any of these you will stop particpating in sport at a younger age

ProZone

Motivation

Ryan Giggs

Motivation - Yes

Ability Level - Yes

Confidence - Yes

Diet - Yes

Ryan Giggs is still playing football at 39 because he meets his areas

Players need to be motivated by something such as winning trophies or breaking records. Since they have been playing the same sport and in the same routine for possibly decades, doing the same thing may become laborious can might not be motivated to continue.

Confidence

Ability Level

Players need to be confident when they get older to maintain the believe that they can compete at the level they are at.

They need to still have the skill and fitness to compete at the same level, therefore the players may need to adapt there training or style of play so they can sustain playing for longer.

E.G - fast players may need to change there style of play to more of a holding role.

Ronaldo

Motivation - Yes

Ability Level - Yes

Confidence - Yes

Diet - NO

Ronaldo stopped playing a higher level of football in his early 30's, because he has a bad diet and was questioned about his weight problems in from 2006 onwards, and because of this lacked fitness

Diet

They need to get a healthy diet with a good amount of carbohydrates and protein so they can maximize there performance and training throughout their career. If they eat to much bad food (fatty food) they might loss fitness and quit playing earlier.

Team Cohesion

Team Cohesion is how well a team or a group work together.

DartFish

VideoAnalysis

In order to become successful as a team, every team member needs to work together, this is shown in video clip from the ICE Hockey film 'Might Ducks'.

However, if at least one team member follows his own path and not work with a team, then it will effect the team cohesion and the performance will be effected.

  • Team Cohesion cause improved performance
  • Performance improves Team Cohesion

Temperature and Weather

When playing sport, temperature and weather can effect the performance of players and the results in matches.

Wind can have an effect on all outdoor sport such as rugby, golf and athletics. Generally, the faster and more unpredictable the wind is the bigger effect it has on your performance. This is because the sports such as rugby and golf where ball flies and stays in the air you have to be cleaver to adjust your swing or kick direction to compensate for the wind.

In athletics is is slightly different, depending on the direction of the wind is can either benefit you or hinder you in terms of distance and time. It doesn't effect the result as much in track events because everyone is running either against or with the wind at the same time, just the time changes. In field events however as wind probably would change during the event athletes throwing or jumping at different times might be effected differently by the wind.

Even though the times count in terms of placing for sprint events and jumping, their a limit to which wind can assist you to achieve World Records. The limit is 3.9 knots, anything assisting you over this speed records are not counted.

Weather can have an effect on the Pitch Conditions. This has an effect on sport by changing the effectiveness of the playing styles and injuries. It is most important in cricket, where the pitch is heavily effected by weather.

  • Dry pitches with little/no moisture in the wicket, favors the batsmen as their is not as much swing.
  • Greener wickets aids fast bowling as they can generate more seam movement.
  • Dry, cracked wickets favor spin bowls by the ball altering direction on the bounce, confusing the batters.

Mind Set and Work Rate- Depending on the temperature during the match/event, might effect how much effort you want put in. This can be both positive and negative, for example, if it is cold you might feel like you can't be bothered and as a result you put 100% effort into performing. On the other hand, you might want to run around more to get warm, therefore working harder and putting more effort in.

In the picture to the left, with the condition how they are. Players could act in either of the way mentioned above.

Teams choose their bowling line up depending on the wicket the match is being played on. For example, during England tour of India in 2012-13 they included 4 spinners in the squad because of India's dry wickets favoring spinners. Whereas only 2 spinners were used when England played India during a home test series in 2011.

Confidence

Confidence is the believe in your abilities to success. In sport is can be related to believing you are going to score, if you are in a one on one situation.

The two videos compare the difference between players who have confidence and then lacking it.

They both involve Fernando Torres who after his £50 million move to Chelsea, lacked confidence and scored only 1 goal in his first 18 league matches. Compared to 81 goals in 142 games for Liverpool

Motivation

Being high in confidence improves your performance, when this happens you believe that nothing is impossible and you are capable of winning competitions and achieving greatness.

Motivation is the drive within us to keep playing a sport. Different factors affect our motivation, such as our desire to win, personal enjoyment and money.

Effects on Performance

In contrast, having low self-confidence, hampers you performance. You are not able to play as us usually would, missing chances and failing task that would normally be easy and would be achieved.

Extrinsic Motivation

Intrinsic Motivation

Extrinsic motivation comes from outside of the individual. They are motivated by reward and external factors.

“Engaging in an activity for the simple pleasure of participation, with no expectation of material reward”

(Pelletier et al, 1995)

Both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation can lead to an increase in performance.

Extrinsic Motivation leads to a reduction in intrinsic motivation because you are more likely to playing for the reward than for the enjoyment.

If Extrinsic Motivation is given to easily or you have achieved everything you wanted, you are more likely to reduce participation if their is no intrinsic motivation. The example of Benoit Assou-Ekotto in football is a good example of this.

If the Extrinsic Motivation leads to increasing the participants confidence, then their Intrinsic Motivation increases

Intrinsic Motivation last longer than Extrinsic Motivation.

Types of Intrinsic Motivation

  • Play for enjoyment
  • Role Models
  • Interested in the sport

Types of Extrinsic Motivation

  • Trophies
  • Medals
  • Money
  • Prizes

Steven Gerrard is an example of a professional athlete who plays sport for intrinsic motivation

Benoit Assou-Ekotto has admitted he solely plays football for money.
