Middle Relief Pitchers

Starting pitchers are, as the title implies, the pitchers that start the game. Typically they will pitch 4-7 innings depending on how well they pitch and some other factors.

Middle relief pitchers are the pitchers that come in after the starting pitcher. They usually enter the game in the 4th-7th inning.

Different Types of Pitchers

Jordan Walden

There are many different types of pitchers used throughout baseball. When each one of the comes into the game to pitch is dependent on several different factors, such as, what inning it is, who is on deck, and what the situation is. There are 5 basic types of pitchers, starting pitchers, middle relief pitchers, setup pitchers, left-handed specialists, and closing pitchers.

Brian Wilson

Walden has an unusual pitching motion. He hops in the middle of his windup, and actually has both feet in the air for a split second, before returning to the ground and throwing the ball.

Brian Wilson is one of the best closing pitchers in the game and one of the most interesting people. He has played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants. He has pitched in the playoffs and has won a World Series.

Setup Pitchers

A setup pitcher refers to the pitcher who comes in relief to the previous pitcher in the 6th, 7th, or 8th inning and then comes out of the game to let the closing pitcher come in. In this way, they "set up" the closing pitcher to finish the game. The role is very loosely defined and not recognized as an official position. Teams use a setup pitcher when the starting pitcher cannot finish, but it is not late enough in the game to call in the closer.

Closing Pitcher

Joel Peralta

Closing pitcher is are used to close the game. Different closing pitchers can be brought in for different reasons. The coach may want to use a left handed closing pitcher or a right handed closing pitcher to finish the game. Typically closing pitchers throw very fast or have pitches they are extremely challenging to hit.

Craig Kimbrel

Craig Kimbrel is a closing pitcher for the Atlanta Braves in the MLB. On June 6, 2014, he recorded his 155th save, overcoming the previous record of 154 set by John Smoltz, to become the Braves all-time leader in saves.

Left-handed Specialists

Mark Melancon

Left-handed spialist pitchers are not an official position of baseball. These pitchers are left handed and specialize in facing left handed batters. They are brought into the game when a strong left handed batter is up to bat but the defensive can not give up a hit.
