What is it?
An outdoor screening series hosted by the PFS and other local nonprofits. Each event was held in different parts of Philadelphia, and different nonprofits provided activities to engage community members before a film was played. The films for each event were specifically chosen for each location by community leaders that partnered with the PFS. Movies on the Block was funded by Capitol One Bank.

The Actual Event
What is it?
A club for teenagers that allows young people to learn about the mechanics of film without being required to also produce their own films. An introduction to the experience of what film studies is like in a college setting.

What is it?
Free film screenings provided to students either during the normal school year and during the Philadelphia Film Festival that allow schools to bring students in for a viewing of new and important films. The PFS provides learning materials prior to the screenings and discussion questions for after the film viewings.

What is it?
A monthly showcase that provides the opportunity for local Philadelphia filmmakers to have their films shown on the big screen at the Philadelphia Film Center
My Contributions
I watched and rated film submissions as they came in on a rolling basis. I ranked each film on a scale of overall quality, production value, and creativity
I could lead or find local film experts that would be willing to lead master classes or discussions about auteur filmmakers.
Before the screening of a film there would be a lecture or presentation priming people for what important elements will appear in the film they will be watching (making sure that people who learn differently have the resources they might need)
In order to provide a space for the students to put their knowledge into practice, after the screening, the group will rejoin and discuss things they noticed, the important filmic elements, societal implications, etc
What is the goal of the program?
The goal of an outdoor screening series program would be to enhance awareness and understanding of film and to develop a sense of community by bringing a diverse group of people together. It is also a great opportunity to remind participants about the availability of parks and public spaces that allow for gathering and connection. Finally, an important goal would be to raise awareness of Circle Cinema and its partners and their ongoing missions.
The kinds of non-profit that would work best for this program include Kaiser Family Foundation And Schusterman Foundation who have a proven record of working to enhance the Tulsa community as a whole.
And a very special thank you to my Field Advisor at the PFS, Rosie Jacobson and my Praxis Advisor, Tim Harte
A book club that culminates in watching the film adaptation of what is read.
An outdoor movie screening series would be a powerful addition to the Tulsa arts landscape, because it not only focuses on one park or one nonprofit, but caters to the city as a whole and aims to understand how different parts of the city cultivate different ways of living, thinking, and approaching life. This kind of program hosted by Circle Cinema and available to the community at large has the potential to expose a large, diverse audience to films they might not have otherwise learned about in an unexpected setting outside of a traditional theater space.
Philadelphia Film Festival Field Trips and Greenfield Field Trips
Over the 9 months I spent as an intern at the Philadelphia Film Society, I worked on several projects that have inspired me to attempt to implement similar programming at an Arthouse theater, Circle Cinema located in my hometown of Tulsa, OK.
Not only could this program be used as a way to bring new people into the theater, but it could also engage members in a type of conversation that they have not experienced at the theater or ever.

Circle Cinema
While it is possible that a benefit of this program could be to gain members or create more direct promotion, the primary goal is to bring the community together for a positive experience. Circle Cinema will benefit by virtue of making a meaningful contribution to the community, even if it does not increase overall membership.
This program would provide a space for teens who have a passion for learning about film to learn and discuss their ideas with other teens who share their interests. Participants will gain a more nuanced perspective on the function of film in society historically and today. The space will also provide opportunity to discuss this knowledge with peers and local field experts. The program will provide an opportunity for participants to be exposed to clips/films that they might not have otherwise had access to. The participants will build strong relationships with each other, the program staff, Circle Cinema, and the greater Tulsa arts community.

Books and movies often evoke entirely different emotions and ways of understanding a story. It is important to not only dig into different functions of storytelling, but also be able to compare the product to its direct source. How does one lead to the other? It is also always fun to compare what was included in a movie or an important scene in a book that is left out or changed.

This program would provide another opportunity for Circle Cinema to reach a more diverse audience, because it would bring youth into the theater. Bringing younger people into the theater is important, because not only does it widen the audience interested in film and Circle Cinema, but it brings a group with a fresh perspective (and a potentially long term audience) that could serve to generate ideas that would improve Circle Cinema in fresh new ways.
Most people like movies to a certain extent, but not all people have a burning passion for it. Not all people want to learn exactly how films are made, what certain shots are called, and where important film elements began/why they are still important now. This club would provide a space for youth to find like-minded souls to discuss their passion of film. Participants will begin to answer questions like these: How does film function in society? What does it mean to see or not see yourself within a film? Who has historically made the decisions about who makes films, who appears on the screen, and what stories are being told? How do certain technical elements (editing, framing, lighting, sound) evoke emotion? How do the films you watch shape your perspective on the world?
