What is it?

An outdoor screening series hosted by the PFS and other local nonprofits. Each event was held in different parts of Philadelphia, and different nonprofits provided activities to engage community members before a film was played. The films for each event were specifically chosen for each location by community leaders that partnered with the PFS. Movies on the Block was funded by Capitol One Bank.

My Contributions

  • Each community leader was asked to identify what kind of film would be appropriate for an event in their neighborhoods. Based off these qualifications, I made lists of films that they could choose from.
  • For each film, I wrote pre- and post-discussion questions that we provided to families at each event
  • For the actual events, some of the fun and inexpensive activities that I planned included:
  • making jewelry/animals/designs with pipe cleaners and pony beads
  • decorating customized hand fans with stickers and drawings
  • providing sidewalk chalk to play with during the event
  • providing a large piece of paper that people can add drawings/sayings/designs to as they pass by in order to create a community made drawing

The Actual Event

What is it?

A club for teenagers that allows young people to learn about the mechanics of film without being required to also produce their own films. An introduction to the experience of what film studies is like in a college setting.

My Contributions

  • Helped to develop curricula for weekly meetings
  • Helped to budget for food resources
  • Handmade notebooks for students participating in the program
  • Helped to develop PowerPoint presentations for each lesson

Example of Partial Presentation:

What is it?

Free film screenings provided to students either during the normal school year and during the Philadelphia Film Festival that allow schools to bring students in for a viewing of new and important films. The PFS provides learning materials prior to the screenings and discussion questions for after the film viewings.

My Contributions

  • Created an updated list of school contacts
  • Watched each film and helped to create the pre- and post-viewing materials and discussion questions, but with more of an academic lens than Movies on the Block

What is it?

A monthly showcase that provides the opportunity for local Philadelphia filmmakers to have their films shown on the big screen at the Philadelphia Film Center

My Contributions

I watched and rated film submissions as they came in on a rolling basis. I ranked each film on a scale of overall quality, production value, and creativity

I could lead or find local film experts that would be willing to lead master classes or discussions about auteur filmmakers.

Before the screening of a film there would be a lecture or presentation priming people for what important elements will appear in the film they will be watching (making sure that people who learn differently have the resources they might need)

In order to provide a space for the students to put their knowledge into practice, after the screening, the group will rejoin and discuss things they noticed, the important filmic elements, societal implications, etc

Director Class Series Proposal for Circle Cinema

Outdoor Screening Series Proposal for Circle Cinema

What is the goal of the program?

What kind of nonprofits should we aim to partner with?

Possible Directors to Use as A Class Focus

The goal of an outdoor screening series program would be to enhance awareness and understanding of film and to develop a sense of community by bringing a diverse group of people together. It is also a great opportunity to remind participants about the availability of parks and public spaces that allow for gathering and connection. Finally, an important goal would be to raise awareness of Circle Cinema and its partners and their ongoing missions.

Quentin Tarantino

Akira Kurosawa

What will it do for the community as a whole?

The kinds of non-profit that would work best for this program include Kaiser Family Foundation And Schusterman Foundation who have a proven record of working to enhance the Tulsa community as a whole.

Agnes Varda

What types of activities should be available at the events?

John Ford

  • Create and expand community awareness with the power of film/cinema and to channel social reflection and community transformation.
  • By providing a public space to share the film experience, it expands participants’ connection to the larger community. By strengthening the Tulsa community, we increase awareness, comfort and enjoyment organically.

Ingmar Bergman

Film/Book Club Proposal for Circle Cinema

  • Circle Cinema and its partners should work together to generate activities for the program. Each organization included in the event should be responsible for some of the activities.
  • The inexpensive and fun activities I helped to plan for the Movies on the Block 2019 season would work really well for these events as well.

And a very special thank you to my Field Advisor at the PFS, Rosie Jacobson and my Praxis Advisor, Tim Harte

A book club that culminates in watching the film adaptation of what is read.

What is the draw?

My Time at the PFS

Possible Books/Films

Where would the events be held?

Youth Film Club Proposal for Circle Cinema

An outdoor movie screening series would be a powerful addition to the Tulsa arts landscape, because it not only focuses on one park or one nonprofit, but caters to the city as a whole and aims to understand how different parts of the city cultivate different ways of living, thinking, and approaching life. This kind of program hosted by Circle Cinema and available to the community at large has the potential to expose a large, diverse audience to films they might not have otherwise learned about in an unexpected setting outside of a traditional theater space.

Why do I like

this program?

Philadelphia Film Festival Field Trips and Greenfield Field Trips

  • It is important when deciding which parks or spaces could be used for the outdoor screening series, that the program reaches many different parts of the community: North Tulsa, East Tulsa, West Tulsa, South Tulsa, and Midtown. The spaces that are chosen for the events do not have to be dedicated park space. They just need to be largely accessible to community members in each area.
  • To make sure this program can benefit every member of the community, it is important to reach underserved areas. The goal is to bring together the Tulsa community as a whole, not just those who have easy access to nice parks in the city.

Over the 9 months I spent as an intern at the Philadelphia Film Society, I worked on several projects that have inspired me to attempt to implement similar programming at an Arthouse theater, Circle Cinema located in my hometown of Tulsa, OK.

Not only could this program be used as a way to bring new people into the theater, but it could also engage members in a type of conversation that they have not experienced at the theater or ever.

What will this program do for Circle Cinema?

Promotion

Why would you want to participate?

Philadelphia Film Center

Curation for Monthly Philly Film Showcase

Circle Cinema

While it is possible that a benefit of this program could be to gain members or create more direct promotion, the primary goal is to bring the community together for a positive experience. Circle Cinema will benefit by virtue of making a meaningful contribution to the community, even if it does not increase overall membership.

Possible Curriculum Ideas

What is important about comparing these mediums?

  • Reach out to arts departments in local public and private high schools.
  • Youth Philanthropy Initiative could be a good source of promotion, but also a source to ask what teens are interested in. It is a captive group of Tulsa teens from schools all over the city, who are already in the program because of their passion for helping the community. Also, this could be a potential initiative for one of the cohorts as it could enhance teen life.

This program would provide a space for teens who have a passion for learning about film to learn and discuss their ideas with other teens who share their interests. Participants will gain a more nuanced perspective on the function of film in society historically and today. The space will also provide opportunity to discuss this knowledge with peers and local field experts. The program will provide an opportunity for participants to be exposed to clips/films that they might not have otherwise had access to. The participants will build strong relationships with each other, the program staff, Circle Cinema, and the greater Tulsa arts community.

Cinemaniacs

What does POV look like in practice?

A Trip to the Moon (1902)

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Books and movies often evoke entirely different emotions and ways of understanding a story. It is important to not only dig into different functions of storytelling, but also be able to compare the product to its direct source. How does one lead to the other? It is also always fun to compare what was included in a movie or an important scene in a book that is left out or changed.

How has film reflected and impacted social norms & representation across time - what has changed / what hasn’t?

How is film used to tell stories that are fictional, non-fictional, and a combination?

What is the role of speculative and science fiction in a society?

What would it mean for Circle Cinema to partner with youth organizations, schools, and families around the city?

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2015)

  • What do we wish we knew about film when we were in high school?

This program would provide another opportunity for Circle Cinema to reach a more diverse audience, because it would bring youth into the theater. Bringing younger people into the theater is important, because not only does it widen the audience interested in film and Circle Cinema, but it brings a group with a fresh perspective (and a potentially long term audience) that could serve to generate ideas that would improve Circle Cinema in fresh new ways.

  • What is film’s role in society?

Why do you care?

Most people like movies to a certain extent, but not all people have a burning passion for it. Not all people want to learn exactly how films are made, what certain shots are called, and where important film elements began/why they are still important now. This club would provide a space for youth to find like-minded souls to discuss their passion of film. Participants will begin to answer questions like these: How does film function in society? What does it mean to see or not see yourself within a film? Who has historically made the decisions about who makes films, who appears on the screen, and what stories are being told? How do certain technical elements (editing, framing, lighting, sound) evoke emotion? How do the films you watch shape your perspective on the world?
