Reward and Journey
Home
This video shows the villain archetype which is Tank in "Surfs Up". Also we see the hair archetype which shows power and confidence, which is very apparent in the video.
In the final surf competition, Cody shows his maturity by letting Chicken Joe win. This leaves Cody in second place but he still beat Tank who is in third. His reward is learning that surfing isn't all about winning, but having fun and enjoying yourself and time with friends. Following the competition, Cody is questioned for why he did what he did but he was not phased, knowing he did the right thing. Cody, Big Z, and Lani all go surfing and live happily doing what they love.
Within "Surf's Up", there is constantly ocean present and everyone is surfing. The ocean is blue which can signify truth and transparency. This relates to the movie because it's while Cody and Geek are preparing to surf he reveals that he is actually Big Z and he faked his death. This is a turning point of the movie where everything changes. Chicken Joe is the comedic relief and trickster in the movie. He is against Tank and stands by Cody by motivating him. He may not seem too bright at times but his simple mindset helps Cody remain relaxed and confident. Joe always wants the best for Cody and helps him become a great surfer. Lastly, the main villain is a large penguin named Tank Evans. He is incredibly muscular and has great slicked back hair that represents his immense strength.
Allies/Helpers
Cody has several allies and helpers who support him in becoming a skilled surfer. The first is his best friend Chicken Joe. He is very helpful in encouraging Cody to do his best and defeat Tank. The second is his girlfriend Lani who introduces him to the greatest surf mentor, Geek. Geek is another helper because he teaches him everything he needs to know to be a successful surfer.
In the beginning, Cody admires Lani from a distance. However, once Cody gets injured, he begins a relationship with the lifeguard. This grows and flourishes into a great love between the two.
Supernatural aid
Talisman
When Cody is a child, he is given a wooden shell necklace that says "Z". This was given to him by Big Z, his surf idol. Cody believes that this is the reason he can surf and attributes his successes to the necklace and refuses to remove it.
When Cody enters the first surf competition he steps on a sea urchin and must be medically taken care of. Lani, his soon to be girlfriend, takes him to Geek, who heals him of the pain. He later trains him to become a skilled surfer. He offers to give him surf lessons and teaches him how to carve his own boards as well. This is super natural because we later find out that the supposivley dead, Big Z, is Geek. So he has been helped by a dead person.
Three Tests
On his journey, Cody encounters 3 tests. His first test is to train with Big Z and learn that surfing isn't just about winning, but that the ultimate purpose is to have fun. Second, Big Z has Cody carve his own surfboard. At first, Cody does not pass this test, and shapes a faulty surfboard. However, after his failed attempt, he is determined to create a perfect surfboard. After many hours of carving, he passes this test. This test taught Cody the patience he lacked. Finally, Cody's last test is to surf in the competition. During the competition, Cody demonstrates all the lessons that Big Z had taught him and he is set up to win the contest. However, he shows his maturity when he lets Chicken Joe win.
Cody Mavericks is the hero of the movie "Surfs Up". He is a very immature, unskilled but aspiring surfer. It is through hard work and an amazing mentor he becomes a professional surfer, defeating the current champion, Tank Evans. Because of his immaturity at the beginning of the movie contrasting with his adulthood at the end, we know that he is an initiation hero.
Once Cody Mavericks reaches Pengu Island, he immediately is thrown into a huge surf contest. His first and only wave tosses him over the falls and in a bad loop of huge waves constantly crashing on him and pushing him under. It is in this failure that he accidentally steps on a sea urchin, leaving his foot in pain but beginning his journey to greatness.
After spending his whole life full of boredom in Antarctica, Cody gets an opportunity to go to Pengu Island to surf in a professional competition. Cody immediately accepts the quest and rides a whale into
Pengu Island to compete.
Cody's home is Antartica. Here his own mother and brother do not support his passion for surfing. It is very boring and nothing eventful ever takes place. He hates his home and wants to leave to become a pro surfer.
