MODERN FAMILY

Modern Family is a "mocumentary" style television series about a large and diverse family.

  • Cameron (Cam) and Mitchell are not your average gay T.V. couple. The two additionally have a child, adopted from China, named Lilly.
  • Clare, Mitchell's sister and Phil are married with three very different children Alex, Haley, and Luke.
  • Jay, Claire and Mitchell's father, remarried to Gloria and the two live with her son Manny.

BLACK HUMOR

METAFICTION

All throughout the show, characters get injured for comic relief.

The series explores the interactions between the 3 families and their quest to express their individuality.

PASTICHE

POSTMODERNISM

Modern Family also commonly imitates "The Office" by having it's characters talk directly to the camera.

Throughout the series, there are many misunderstandings that cause several characters to believe in separate realities.

Ex: Both Mitchell and Cam want to propose to one another, and end up ruining each other's plans.

RELATIVISM

METANARRATIVE

While playing charades, it becomes obvious that each person/couple has a different point of view when it comes to communicating.

REVISIONIST

LACAN'S THEORY

Each family has it's own set of beliefs in the way their children should be raised.

In the most recent series, gay marriage is legalized, allowing Cam and Mitchel the opportunity to get married.

Gloria's first language is Spanish, which can often be painfully evident when she tries to communicate with the other characters. Due to this language barrier, she has different words for some things.
