Middle Class Values & Habits

Middle Class was not only or just about $! It was about:

1) Respectability and Reliability (working class not respectable or reliable)

2) Manners were important - no elbows on table

3) Clean clothes - multiple outfits

4) Washing hands and bathing

5) Using proper English

6) Drinking in moderation- temperance

7) The Home as almost a private "church" or "temple"

8) Cult of Domesticity - women rule the home- the priestess : teaching morals, manner and respectable behavior

Funeral Parlors took funerals out of the home - in the parlor - and made them more "respectable" affairs.
