Estonian language immersion class at Russian school.

Early Estonian language immersion of children started in some special kindergartens or at special classes in several schools from year 2000.

The aim is to help to acquire Estonian as it is the official language. More and more mostly Russian speaking parents and students understand the importance of the knowledge of the language as it gives chances to get better education and jobs.

Estonia fell into the Russian Empire as a result of The Great Northern War (1700-1721)and stayed there until 1918 when Estonian became an independent country. We are celebrating the 100th anniversary next year

Jews have contributed a lot to Estonian culture and felt themselves equal citizens.

Eri Klas was one of the best-known Estonian musician in the world. He had conducted more than 100 symphony orchestras from 40 countries.

Siima Škop was a well-known Estonian illustrator whose lovely pictures of famous fairy tales were admired by our parents.

Juri Lotman was a well-known professor at Tartu University who was also the world famous semiotic.

Swedish time was in the 17 century in Estonia. In education there were big changes as , for example, in 1630 Tartu Academic Gymnasium was built which was changed into Tartu University in 1632. This university belongs to the best ones in Europe and it was established by Johan Skytte.

The second gymnasium was established in Tallinn and students still study there nowadays.

Schools for peasants were started to build because Sweden was a Lutheran country and Lutherans had to read.

Bengt Forselius was a founder of public education in Estonia, author of the first ABC-book in the Estonian language, he also founded the first teachers’ college, to teach Estonian schoolteachers and parish clerks.

Bengt Forselius took his two best students to Swedish king to show that they can read and write as locals Baltic Germans didn't believe and like that.

Beautiful city Narva was built in baroque style but Soviets bombed it and destroyed. Lots of bastions were built in Tallinn, Narva, and Pärnu.

Struve-Otto Wilhelm von Struve pioneered the study of double stars and contributed greatly to our modern understanding of astrophysics.

Otto Wilhelm von Struve was a Baltic German, the Russian astronomer. He also built an observatory.

Baltic Germans

In cities the German influence was remarkable on the language, architecture, culture and manners.

Baltic Germans ate similar food as Estonians today. The differences were food quality and availability. For example, Estonian popular potato salad originates from the kitchens of the manors of Batic Germans.

The influence of Baltic Germans has been very big through the history on Estonians` own culture, traditions, food, and spirit.

One of the biggest achievements is the translation of the Bible into the Estonian language by Anton Thor Helle in 1739.

There were lots of scientists in Estonia who were Baltic Germans.

We have many beautiful manors built for Baltic Germans, some of them are schools nowadays.

Adam Johann Ritter von Krusenstern, was a Russian admiral and explorer of Baltic German descent, who led the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe

Most Baltic Germans live in Germany today as they left before the WW II.
