Themes in The Blithedale Romance

Death

Zenobia commits suicide to spite Coverdale. She was in love in with him and thought that her death would haunt him for ever. In this instance death means revenge. Zenobia has won the anguish of Coverdale through her suicide. This may seem paradoxical however, in literature it seems that this is popular. However, the joke is on Zenobia when Coverdale realizes he is in love with Priscilla.

Necromancy

The idea of necromancy takes on an alternate meaning in this literary use. It is the loss of agency of one and the control of the that person by another. An example of this is the relationship between Coverdale and Priscilla, and how he controls her for a specific amount of time.

Community

The theme of community is very prevalent throughout the story. Despite the secrets, an effort is made by a select few to make the community work, even though it is not a smooth transition from mainstream society.

Secrets

One recurring theme in the novel is secrets. When Coverdale brings Priscilla to the farm, he does not share her past with anyone. Also, Mr. Moodie is very hesitant when asking Coverdale a question in the beginning of the novel.
