Weapons

  • The US used lots of "firepower": they equipped soldiers, tanks, and armored cars with flamethrowers.
  • Many soldiers carried light or sub machine-guns.
  • The most used weapon in the Battle of Iwo Jima was the M1918 Browning automatic rifle.
  • The also used bayonets in melee combat.

Jap Facts

  • Over 19,000 Japanese people died.
  • The Japanese people had lots of defenses and people to control them.
  • The Japs lost, and we got control of the islands.

Iwo Jima Flag Raising

  • Colonel Chandler Johnson told the orders to raise the flag, and was credited to it.
  • Six men had to raise the flag up, so make a statement for their country.
  • Out of Michael Strank, Rene Gagnon, Ira Hayes, Franklin Sousley, John Bradley, and Harlon Block, only three of them survived.

  • It was full of sulfuric acids, which people were intoxicated (poisoned) by.
  • The slanted hillsides made people fight close up to, with their bayonets.
  • The US sent 20000 troops to Iwo Jima.
  • Factories helped the war by changing the products to war supplies.
  • The US also helped by saving energy and food.

  • The Battle of Iwo Jima was also called Operation Detatchment
  • The battle started February 19,1945.
  • It was obviously on the island of Iwo Jima.

The War

  • Many people were killed quickly.
  • It was a furious fight along the way to ending imperialism in Japan.
  • Missiles and artillery were used in fighting and defense.

The End of the War

  • The war ended March 26, 1945.
  • 6,000 Americans died, and 20,000 were wounded.
  • The Americans won and later went on to end Japanese imperialism of the Pacific.
