Alchemy was the medieval, or ancient forerunner of chemistry, based on the supposed transformation of matter. It was concerned particularly with attempts to convert base metals into gold or to find some kind of universal "magical potion." It was kind of like sciences mixed with mythology and guessing. It was used and still can be used in many things, like medicine, historical research, subject education, and it can even be used in art and entertainment
The Elizabethan Era wasn't the best of times for criminals. It was so bad, that the lower classes of England would consider going to watch an execution a day out. People were arrested for things such as theft and adultery, and their punishments included being hanged, burned, whipped and even publicly starved to death.
During this era, theater was shifting from a religious activity to an everyday thing. Theaters were built all around the country to present plays. Among the most famous authors were Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe and Robert Greene.
Today, most people are very excited and look forward to their wedding day. However, back in this era, marriages were arranged at birth. When the "couple" was married, the woman was supposed to bring money into the marriage, and then she was expected to perform all the cleaning duties of the household. Elizabethan money was some of the most confusing in the world. The basic idea is it begins with a penny. 12 pennies (equivalent to 12 pence) is equal to one shilling and 20 shillings make up a pound. People never spoke in pounds, as that would be equivalent to around 300 dollars today. They normally spoke in pence, as you could buy a decent glass of ale for one or two.
The Elizabethan Era, is the period in English history when Queen Elizabeth the First ruled, or 1558-1603. Compared to the periods around it, it is actually seen as a time of peace and calm for the country. Also, it was a time of flowering ideas, as theater, art, science and math were all becoming popular.
Life expectancy was very low at the time, largely due to the amount of infants dying. The saying was "If you can live to be 12, you can live to be 70." Graves were draped in black, and candles were often lit to light the path for the soul. There usually was a time of feasting after, and the whole neighborhood is invited to it.
In the Elizabethan period, there were many sports and games played for fun. A few sports and games were archery (bow and arrow), backgammon, prison-base (tag), fencing, leap frog, and horse racing. There were many pastimes that occurred during the Elizabethan times, and as you see, some still exist even today!
Rich women normally wore gowns, hats, corsets, (underwear), collars, ruffs and shoes. Rich men normally wore doublets, breeches, (underwear), collars, ruffs, hats and shoes.
Dowry is the money that is transferred from the brides family to the grooms at the time of marriage. One common punishment for rape was that the kidnapper had to pay the woman's dowry. St. Nicholas came about because he provided for three girls, so they could get married.
