GOAL!

Organizations devoted to stopping/cleaning up the pollution caused by it?

.Currently, there are no organizations set up that deal with hexachlorobutadiene.

Where in the United States is it the biggest problem?

.Florida seems to have the most exposure to hexachlorobutadiene.

.It is not a problem in Georgia.

What can be done to prevent exposure?

.First and foremost, prevent any direct contact with skin and eyes.

.There are traces of hexachlorobutadiene in drinking water, so children are recommended to keep intake under 0.1 mg/L per 7 years, and adults are suggested to take in no more than 0.4 mg/L in the same amount of time.

What are the side effects to humans?

Hexachlorobutadiene

.It has been determined that hexachlorobutadiene has the potential to cause cancer in humans, but it leaves the body very quickly.

.There have been no tests conducted with humans, but in the studies with animals some tumors have been caused in the kidneys and liver.

What are side effects to wildlife?

.Hexachlorobutadiene can accumulate in fish and shellfish. If animals breathe in a large amount of it, their noses become irritated. Also reduction in the weight of fetuses has been noted when the mother takes in large amounts of hexachlorobutadiene.

.When rats and mice drank low levels of it, they experienced kidney and liver damage. The same is true for rabbits when hexachlorobutadiene comes in contact with their skin.

Where does most of its pollution come from?

.Most of the pollution caused by hexachlorobutadiene is caused by breathing in the air of the workplace.

.Big industries cause pollution when they dispose of their waste that contains hexachlorobutadiene and traces of it leak into the air.

What is it used for?

.Hexachlorobutadiene is most commonly used as a solvent and to make rubber compounds.

What is it?

.Hexachlorobutadiene (C4Cl6), also called perchlorobutadiene, is a volatile organic compound that can be found in some drinking water. Most of the hexachlorobutadiene found in the US has been imported from Germany.
