Moral support
Osborne and Trotter try to conceal the fact that Raleigh will be killing people and try to sugar coat the situation as much as possible. This shows Raleigh's childish personality since he is unaware of the dangers and says ''it's frightfully exciting.''
Not much is known about what he looks like
"I say - it's most frightfully exciting!"
Raleigh is dying, "Could we have a light? It’s – it’s so frightfully dark and cold" and is comforted by Stanhope . Showing even when in a dangerous situation Raleigh rather focuses on the dark , which is the least of his problems and is a fear commonly found in children. This scene is very important due to the fact , Stanhope acts like a fatherly/brotherly figure by comforting Raleigh in his last moments.
