When a child watches other children play but doesn't engage in the play.May have discussion about the play but will not engage.
I have witnessed this when a child is unsure about the activity or toy or even the children and is taking it in by observing
Solitary play is defined as a child being alone and maintaining focus on an activity unaware or uninterested in what others are doing
This stage of play is often observed in children aged 2-3 years
I have witnessed this in my setting with children who often are transitioning from solitary play after time in the setting
Parallel Play is also known as adjacent play;a child plays separately but close to them and mimicking their actions
Socially;helps to learn to control impulses,teaches how to respect the decisions of others and practices both verbal and non verbal communication
Communicationally;Imaginary play along with role play involves verbal communication and use of language and promotes collaboration and listening skills
Physically;Helps to develop fine and gross motor skills and helps hand eye co ordination
Cognitive;Recalls pictures and processess from past experiences-doctors,the shops
Pretend play is critical to learn to solve problems and draw conclusions
This is a transition play from socially immature solitary and onlooker type of play to socially mature associative and co operative play.
I have witnessed this with a vhild i ahve workled with who has transitined from solitary non verbal play to parrallel play with some language over the period of a year
Mildred Parten born 1902 was an American Sociologist and a researcher at the Univeristy of Minnesota's institute of Child Development who developed the stages of play in 1932.
Co Operative Play is when a child is interested in the children playing but not the activity.
I have witnessed this in the setting with children playing and wanting to play with the children but not necessarily wanting to play with what they are playing but are just wanting to be friends.
The stages of play theory is used in current practice, to use as a way to identify the way children play. Observations and baselines are used in settings to get a better understanding of the child's development and what level they are at and how we can best cater for their learning and neds along with having an impact on our understanding of play.

In setting I have witnessed this with children who are being phased into the setting new,for the first few days the children watch to get a feel for the children and atmosphere
Competitive Play is when achievement and producing and end product is important
To much competition can be destructive to development and self esteem along with friendships
Competitive play is more evident with children who are older often in sports or out of school activities.
