What is coiled tubing?
Coiled Tubing refers to a continuous metal piping which comes spooled on a large reel. It has many uses and benefits, which will be discussed in this presentaton.
Able to deploy and retrieve downhole tools while continuously circulating fluids, thus reducing greatly the possibility of being stuck in the hole
Drilling Rig
CT rigs are compact and offer the ability for rapid mobilization and rig up/ rig down.
Circulation
(Nitrogen Kick)
Pumping
After the killing of a well, to circulate the fluid out of the wellbore gas is injected using coiled tubing. It is most commonly Nitrogen. It can be also used to clear the wellbore of any debris.
Pipes
Dispersing fluid to a certain location in the well such as cementing perforations, or performing chemical washes of downhole components such as sandscreens
What are functions of coiled tubing?
Pressure and Tension
Logging and perforating
Oil
- Cleaning boreholes
- Through-tubing recompletion
- Fishing
- Fracturing
- Milling
- Drilling
- Logging and perforating
While these operations are by default in the realm of wireline, CT provides a clear advantage of being rigid. This makes logging and perforating in deviated and horizontal wells easier and more economic.
Safety
Drilling
(Sliding)
A modern method of drilling that uses coiled tubings instead of conventional drill pipe. It doesn't use a topdrive or kelly, instead it uses a mud-motor to power the bit.
The ability to perform continuous well control operations especially with pipe in motion.
Buckling
Producing
Coiled Tubing can be used in production from shallow gas wells that produce some water. The smaller ID will cause the velocity of the fluid to increase, and will assist in the lifting of the fluid to the surface. It can be run inside the casing instead or inside the the conventional tubing.
The fact that you are always tied into your mud pump also gives a huge advantage to either eliminate kicks or to control a blowout.
Neutral Point
CTD rigs are statistically safer than conventional rotary drilling rigs.
The body of the coiled tubing has no connections to make or break while going in and out of the hole thus increasing personnel safety due to reduced pipe handling needs
