Chapter 5-6 Questions

1) What do you believe is the significance of the legend of the Lady in White? Do you think it will play a part later on, or that it is merely a small detail meant to convey the nature of the town of Whitby?

2) What do you think the strange ship off of the coast is doing, and who do you believe might be on it? Based on that, what do you predict will happen regarding that ship and whomever is on it?

Chapter 5 and 6 Quick Review

“Had I even the secret of one such mind,

did I hold the key to the fancy of even one lunatic,

I might advance my own branch of science

to a pitch compared with which Burdon-Sanderson’s physiology

or Ferrier’s brain knowledge would be as nothing.

If only there were a sufficient cause!” (76)

blood, to transfer from full veins of one to the empty veins

which pine for him" (Chapter 10, pg 19)

(Lucy sleepwalking)

Categories: Disinfectants (antibacterials), Anesthetics (numbing), Narcotics (sleep inducing), Cathartics (purgatives), Emetics (vomit-causing purgatives), Diuretics (purgatives), Diaphoretics (sweat-inducing)

Introduction to Medicine

Advancements: roots of diseases discovered, antitoxins made, vaccines created, new and more effective treatment methods utilized

Common Illnesses, Afflictions & Treatment

  • Dracula took place in the late nineteenth century
  • Medicine was largely unregulated during this time
  • Some medical terms or references made within Dracula include somnambulism, blood transfusions, and psychological treatment by Dr. John Seward, among others.

- Cholera (deadly bacterial disease from contaminated water)

- Diptheria (dangerous bacterial infection of throat)

- Malaria (parasitic disease from mosquitoes)

- Typhoid fever (bacterial disease from contaminated water or food)

- Tuberculosis (bacterial disease of the lungs)

Not many actual cures were known, so in terms of treatment it mostly dealt with curing or abating symptoms. This meant that painkillers like opium and morphine were very popular.
