How it Became What it is Today?

Louis Riel (Métis) – The founding father of Manitoba and a leader to the Métis people, Riel sought to preserve the rights and culture of the Métis among the encroachment of European influence across the country and into the west.

On December 12, 2007, the House of Commons unanimously supported a Private Member's motion stating that "the government should immediately adopt a child first principle, based on Jordan's Principle, to resolve jurisdictional disputes involving the care of First Nations children."

The federal response to Jordan's Principle is being implemented within the context of existing health and social programs.

Aboriginal Canadians are indigenous people In Canada. They are composed of Metis, Inuit and First Nations. The Metis peole are of Mixed race with First Nation and Europens. Inuits inhabit the Arctic regions such as Greenland and Canada. While the First Nations people are various aboriginals that are neither Inuit and Metis.

First Nations refer to North America as Turtle Island. The above image shows the interconnection of different species.

Jordan’s Principle is a child first principle named in memory of Jordan River Anderson. Jordan was a First Native child from the Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba. Born with complex medical needs, Jordan spent more than two years unnecessarily in the hospital while the Province of Manitoba and the Federal Government argued over who should pay for his at home care. Jordan died in hospital at the age of five years old, never having spent a day at home with family.
