Ancestor worship
Funeral
Tombs
Filial Piety (Xiao)
The father-son pattern is the model which is then extended to all other social relations, especially the relations between rulers and subjects, and between hierarchical superiors and inferiors.
Why should funerals and tombs be as magnificent as possible?
Competition: children are relatively equal vis-a-vis their parents; people of the same rank are relatively equal vis-a-vis the rulers. They compete to excel over each other within the authority framework. Competition between brothers of the same parents; between branches of the same lineage; between lineages in the same village, etc.
What are the benefits for:
- the ancestor?
- the descendents?
- the descendents'
community?
How do you show filial piety in the funeral and ancestor worship?
