The History Of The Catholic Church Timeline

Mary Mackillop 1842-1909

St Vincent's Hospitial, 1893 AD

Mary MacKillop was educated to become a governess, teacher of the catholic Denominational School, proprietress of a boarding school for girls. As she grew up, she was influenced by Father Patrick Geoghegan to be strictly penance to religious life. Mary was the first member and superior of the group " The Sisters of St Joseph of Sacred Heart". This group dedicated themselves to educate poor children. In Journey throughout Australasia she established schools, convents and charitable institutions but came with conflict with Bishops who wanted control over the Sisterhood. Throughout her life she has fought for the rights of catholic schools and unfortunately died by a stroke on August 1909.

Five Sisters of Charity arrived in Melbourne and built a hospital on 1893. This hospitial had an opening of a small cottage hospital with small paved stones on Victoria Parade. It Originally held 30 beds and within its 14 first months it had 2584 patients. The Sisters of Charity would help nurse peole that needed help. The honorary medical staff would provide medical and surgery procedures. Overtime the hospital got more advanced and grew more. The ovearll importance to of this hospital is to repersent that the catholic Churhc in Australia is willing to help.

Caroline Chisholm, 1808-1877

First Catholics Of Australia, 1788 AD

First Public Mass of Australia, 1803 AD

Caroline Chisholm arrived to Sydney in Emerald Isle on 1838. Caroline Chisholm met every immigrants ship and became familiar to the wharves. She was able to position female immigrants in her home for shelter. On 1841, Caroline Chisholm meet up with the Governor , Lady Gipps and the Sydney Herald so that she could plan a girl's home. Although she had an anti-Catholic feeling able was able to persuade Lady Gipss that she was a uninterested philanthropist. Caroline had the permission to access old immigrant barracks for the Female Immigrants home. It was able to shelter 96 women and free employment registry in Sydney. Her overall importance to the catholic church is to help out females in need.

The name first fleet was given when 11 ships left Great Brtitian to start the first european settlement to Australia. During 1788-1791 AD, the first fleet was the first introduction of Catholic people to reside on Australian land. Most of the Catholics were irish convicts and British Armed service. Out of all convicts, one-tenth of the convicts transported to Australia were catholic,these convicts were mostly Irish as 50% of them were born in Ireland and the other portion having Irish extractions. These Irish convicts would have been sent to Australia for not agreeing and protesting against British Rule or breaking laws at that time.

The first legal Catholic mass was celebrated in Sydney on May 1803. This key event was the first act where Catholic worshipers were able to practice their religion legally. Before the first mass on April 1803, Governor Gidly King granted government orders to free the practice of religion. As a result ,former Roman priest James Dixon had the conditional emancipation and permission to practice his responsibilities of a priest James Dixon took this opportunity to have celebrated the first public mass of Australia.

St Patricks Cathedral

Started in 1858 the St Patrick Cathedral was established on 1939. The front of the church was built witihin 10 years but the building was delayed due to Australia's depression that happened during in 1981. St Patricks remains a place of god. This cathedral was the immigrant community built with courage,vision and love. St Patricks Cathedral was a reminder to Australians that God was present with them.

First Religion Of Australia,1700 AD

In Australia, the first Spiritual being/Religion that roamed the land was the Dreamtime Religion. The Dreamtime was the Aboriginals understanding of how creation of the world came to be.

First Bishop of Australia, 1835 AD

John Bede Polding was the first Roman Catholic Bishop in Australia from 1835. 8 years after he then became the first archbishop of Sydney. Polding was an English monk who followed the rule of Benedict. He always wanted to establish a church in Australia that lived under religious vows, in which that the scholarship and the way people civilize would be similar to the earlier centuries of Europe. Many Irish priest did not agree with his plan as this was not how a church should be conceded. However new priest taught with the newly developed dioceses and social environment undermine the authorities of Polding's Vision. Without the first bishop in Australia the Catholic churhc would not have a proper minister

The Aboriginal Religion

"Dreamtime" AKA the "dreaming" is the Indigenous belief of the creation of the Earth. They believe that ancestral beings walked among the earth and during this process they made the land, sky, laws and life.

During this time, all codes of conduct,relationship, rules and relationships had to revolve around the Dreaming.

This had an importance ot the Australian Catholic Church as this was the first spirtual religon in Austrlia

The 11th World youth day took place on 2008 in Sydney. This was the largest youth international event for Catholics. The day was announced by the pope on World Youth Day 2005 which Pope Benedict XV quoted: (Acts:1:8) "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you"

About 500,000 people from 200 countries went to this event while during the weekend about 1,000,000 attended. The importance of this event is allow young catholics to gather around so that they can strengthen their bond with the pope.

First Offical Catholic Priest of Australia, 1820 AD

Father John Joseph Therry was Australia's first catholic priest to fleet to Australia with Father Phillip Conolly. Father Therry heard that Catholics in Australian convicts had no Catholic priest so he was willing to be assigned to go to Australia for missionary. Fr Therry arrived to Sydney on May 1820 by a ship that took 100 convicts. In Australia Father John Terry was respected for his authorities for co-operation, he was irritated for the restraint of the legal action and social rights as a Catholic priest in with the government. The overall impotance of Fr Therry is to help introduce Australia to a priest.
