Buddhist and Hindu temples, Muslim mosques, and Christian churches are all very important sites in Sri Lanka because religion is huge. Because of the large role of religion, art and literature are strongly influenced by it. Folk dancing, or more specifically Kandyan dancing, is very popular and is even the national dance. Dances are performed at Buddhist festivals and tell stories of local kings and heroes. Dancers wear headdresses and other over the top sparkly jewelry at the annual Perahera festival.

Settlement of Sri Lanka

In the sixth century B.C. people called the Sinhalese from northern plains of Asia crossed the strait separating the Sri Lanka. They developed a homeland and culture of their own. Then in the fourth A.D. a group of Indians called the Tamils arrived from southern Asia. They settled further North and brought a different culture and language. Europeans came to colonize in the 16th century. The British eventually took control of what they called Ceylon. They then renamed it Sri Lanka after it became a republic. Tensions grew between the Sinhalese and Tamils. Tamils claimed discrimination and wanted an independent state, but instead a war broke out. 70,000 lives were claimed before the Tamils were defeated by Sri Lanka government.

A Muslim State in the Maldives

Maldives were originally settled by Buddhists and Hindus from Sri Lanka and India around the 6th century B.C. Arab traders made frequent visits which eventually led to the conversion to Islam. Sultans then governed the Maldives. In 1968 Maldives became a republic. It is one of the world's smallest independent countries.

Sri Lanka is composed of many ethnic and religious groups. The largest percent of people are Buddhists. Tamil Hindus and Muslims make up the middle percent. Christians make up the minority. Most Sinhalese live in the southern, western, and central parts of the country. Most Tamils live in the central highlands. Muslims mainly live in the the eastern lowlands. Many Sri Lankans choose to live in small towns and villages all across the country. The population of the Maldives is multi-ethnic. The official language is Divehi which is unique to the Maldives. Arabic, Hindi, and English are also common languages.

Cultural Life in the Maldives

Muslim customs strongly influence the Maldives culture. Islam is the state religion, and no other religions are allowed. The big drum and the coordinating dance are the highlight of the Maldives culture. In the performance dancers sway to the drumbeat. This tradition was influenced by Africans.

Sri Lanka’s economy is based on agriculture(mainly rice and farming). Sri Lanka has devoted large areas to plantation agriculture. These farms produce crops such as tea, rubber, and coconuts for export. Sri Lanka is one of the world’s leading tea-producing companies. Some sectors of their economy that are less important include timber, fishing, and mining. Sri Lanka is famous for their gem mining.

In the Maldives farming is limited due to a lack of land. Fishing used to be a primary source of income. It still provides ¼ of the jobs and a large share of the country's export earnings. It has recently been replaced with tourism. The island attracts people from all around the world because of its beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and marine life.

Tough Challenges

Human Geography of South Asia

When the civil war began, the tourism industry collapsed. The war also damaged the infrastructure- roads, bridges, power systems and other services. The economy will likely continue to struggle until the peace will for sure last.

The Maldives face a whole different kind of struggle: global warming. The islands lie low in the water, and if the ice caps melt then the whole island could be flooded completely. Scientists believe this could happen by the end of the 21st century.
