The Ear, the Eye and the Arm

Song Chorus

By Alex

I believe I can fly

I believe I can touch the sky

I think about it every night and day

Spread my wings and fly away

I believe I can soar

I see me running through that open door

I believe I can fly

I believe I can fly

I believe I can fly

(Lyrics from www.azlyrics.com)

Courage

The main theme in the novel is courage. This is reflected when Tendai compares himself to an African warrior or when She Elephant betrays the Masks to save the kids from being sacrifices as even earlier they threatened to murder her "You could be found at the foot of stairs with a broken neck!" even after their threats and they agree to give her fifty-thousand dollars she decides to save the children putting herself at risk for prison time and even death. The song has a message of courage using lines like "I see me runnin' through that open door" and "I believe I can fly"

I Believe I Can Fly

Family

The song I used was 'I Believe I Can Fly' by R.Kelly

because it not only talks about courage but also escaping to a better place, using lyrics like "Spread my wings and fly away" which is similar to Tendai's desire to escape the vlei and then Mrs. Horsepool-Worthingham and even the Masks "Some nights he could hardly bear being chained up. He wanted to

be free and run and run- it didn't matter where,

only to have the feeling of freedom again."

Getting to a better place

Another theme in the book is the strength in family and having to deal with losing your family. Throughout the story Tendai, Rita and Kuda often worry about their parents, what they are doing and even what they simply look like, "Sometimes he woke up at night with a longing so sharp it felt like a knife. He missed mother and father..." In the song it speaks of having other people help you "But now I know the meaning of true love, I'm leaning on everlasting arms"

Which could be a reference to family.

Much of the novel is about leaving the place you are in and getting where you want to be or somewhere better. The children try desperately to get away from Dead Man's vlei and return home, but instead go to Resthaven, which is better for awhile, then they go to Mrs. Horespool-Worthingham's house, which is once again better, but are then kidnapped by the Masks and are then put back into a place they don't want to be before escaping and returning home. The entire song is about finding the courage to escape from where you are and finding a better place, it uses the metaphor of flying away to highlight this
