Barry Dale Loukaitis
Born February 26, 1981 to mom Jo Ann Phillips, and dad Terry Loukaitis. In early years Loukaitis lived in Iowa and Minnesota and moved to Washington in elementary school.
Case and outcome
Childhood
Loukaitis was found guilty after trying to play the insanity card. He was convicted of 1st degree murder, 2 counts of aggravated assault, and 16 counts of aggravated kidnapping.
He was in student counsel, had a lot of friends (said to be very popular) and was on the A honer roll. Many said he was a very nice boy before his parents were separated, he then started staying away from most people. Claiming everyone was "evil and bad."
Is currently serving his 2 life sentence and an additional 205 years with no chance of parole at Clallam Bay Corrections Center
Loukaitis was diagnosed with hyper activity and clinical depression before the crime had occurred. A mental illness present in the last four generations of the Loukaitis and Phillips families.
Donna Wise and John Kendell (prosecutors) presented to the jury that Loukaitis got the idea from the song "Jeremy" (about a troubled teen committing suicide in front of classmates).
Barry was often bullied, beaten, and sexually harrased in his early years. Many believed he wanted revenge and when Manuel Vela began to bully him in 9th grade it triggered him to go on this shooting rampage.
Loukaitis stated he wanted to model his life after Charlie Decker, who kills 2 teachers and takes his algebra class hostage.
Barry's parents separated in 1995, when his mom caught her husband having and affair. She often talked about suicide and even implied Barry should kill himself with her on Valentines Day of 1996. He often told his mom to just write out her feelings, that he didn't want her to die.
After hearing his mom talk of suicide he spent most time locked away in his room talking to no one, not eating, and even not sleeping.
June 1996, Spokan Court Appeals tried to decided weather Loukatis should be tried as an adult or a juvenile. They decided he should be tried as an adult. 3 members convinced Judge Evan Sperline to get psychiatrist Joan Petrich to present a testimony over Loukaitis mental heath.
When Jo Ann Phillips testified during court she stated " I didn't think of Barry at all"
Petrich testified he had been having delusional and messianic thoughts prior to the shooting.
Prosecutors claimed it was planned.
He also held others hostage for over 10 minutes until Jon Lane (gym coach) wrestled him to the ground and kept him subdued till the police arrived.
