The hierarchy in Edo Japan

Samurais

This class was very respected. They would live in castle towns which were controlled by the shogun or daimyo that they served during the edo period. The Samurais were the only class allowed to have swords. They always carried around they’re sword which was sharp enough to cut an enemy in half. They also carried another sword that’s smaller as well to cut of the head of their defeated enemy. There were different rankings of samurai. The lowest ranking was the samauris without masters were the least honourable and they were called ronins.

Peasants

Because farmers sustained food in society they were considered important. The peasants lives were completely controlled by the laws. If your parents are peasants then you’re automatically one too.

Daimyos

Shogun

The Emperor

The shogun is the military ruler of japan. He was the real political ruler. Although the emperor ruled the land technically the shogun actually held the power. The shogun was granted to the top military commander by the emperor. The Tokugawa clan held this position from 1603-1868.

The Emperor was the ruler of the land and had the highest social status. He was a figure head and a leader but only in name. He was the true religious leader but politically he had little power. He was actually under control of the shogun but still holds a higher social status.

Artisans

Artisans generally lived in towns and city. The son of an Artisan was not only restricted to their father but whatever craft their father practiced. Generations of a family line would all do the exact same thing without a choice.
