Hamlet Film Adaptation

(Act III, Scene I)

Physical

This scene is in a bright setting in the castle. There are two shadows of Cladius and Polonius on the castle wall. Hamlet is acting crazy around Ophelia and is pacing around yelling at her. He throws her up against the castle wall then he leaves.

Franco Zeffirelli Versus Kenneth Branagh

Branagh makes Hamlet hug and kiss Ophelia at one moment then in the next he is pulling Ophelia around. Hamlet pushes Ophelia up against a mirror that her father is hiding behind. Hamlet becomes violent and harmful to Ophelia.

Camera

Sound

In this scene Zeffirelli uses sound. There is the sound of footsteps coming downstairs. Zeffirelli adds sad music when Hamlet leaves Ophelia after he talks to her and acts crazy. Hamlet is loud when he is talking and he makes a lot of noise during this scene.

Zeffirelli takes close up shots on Hamlet and Ophelia's faces while they are talking. The Camera follows Hamlet as he walks around Ophelia. The camera pans to the shadows of Cladius and Polonius and then back to Hamlet to show his reaction to the noise. The camera has a full body view of Hamlet throwing Ophelia into the wall.

Branagh has close up on Hamlet and Ophelia's faces when they kiss and when they are talking. there are far away shots when Hamlet is pulling around Ophelia. When Ophelia has her face pressed against the mirror by Hamlet you can just see from their mid chest up.

Branagh plays upbeat classical music in the background. Hamlet is talking quietly to Ophelia when there is a noise that is made by Cladius and Poloinus while they are spying on Hamlet. Hamlet starts yelling while he looks for Cladius and Polonius.

Language

Zeffirelli shows emotion in this scene by making Hamlet change his emotion frequently; he goes from yelling, to talking quietly to Ophelia. Zefirelli cut out lines in this scene; he cut out Hamlet telling Ophelia that she needs to go to a nunnery.

Branagh shows Hamlet and Ophelia talking quietly and normal. Hamlet starts acting crazy and starts yelling. Hamlet shows he is upset by Cladius and Polonius and starts yelling as he looks for them. Branagh did not cut any lines from the scene.
