The Quote from Book

Works Cited

-pg. 162 "...I remember, I remember, I remember something else. What is it? Yes, yes, part of Ecclesiastes. Part of Ecclesiastes and Revelation. Part of that book, part of it, quick now, quick before it gets away, before the shock wears off, before the wind dies. Book of Ecclesiastes... it was just the Preacher by himself , standing there in his mind, looking at him..."

Explanation of Allusion

Ecclesiastes

This quote takes place after the bomb went off while Montag and the rest of the book memorizers were laying on the ground. The tramatic effect of the bomb cleared Montag's memory and he started to remember the part of the Bible that he was trying to read on the subway. "He looked down and he saw he was carrying the Bible open...If you read fast and read all, maybe some of the sand will stay in the sieve. But he read and the words fell through..." After the bomb, he started to remember the words he read earlier on the subway and he finally memorized his book.

The quote also mentions the Preacher which is the speaker of the book. Montag says he sees the Preacher in his mind, telling his ideas to him.

Fahrenheit 451 Allusion:

  • A book of the Bible
  • From the Old Testament
  • Main speaker is Qoheleth which is translated as Preacher
  • Summary of Ecclesiastes- The Preacher tells how depression always results from finding happiness in worldly objects.
