Technology + Concept Mapping
Reasons to use Technology in Science
- Computer technology is pervasive
- Kids are very familiar with it
- It makes information much more accessible
- It can aid in calculations and recording of data
- It helps to personalize education for diverse students
- Real scientists use it

Allow students
to use technology
as a tool in their
investigations
(drills, tutorials,
animations, simulations,
CDs, assessments,
virtual field trips, videos)
(microcomputer-based laboratories, technological tools like microscopes, centrifuges, etc.)
(Word processing/publishing,
Spreadsheets/graphing,
presentations, simulations,
games, webquests, blogs,
websites, iMovie, prezi, skype,
animoto)
How can you see yourself using concept mapping in your classroom?
Try it out!
- Try out each app or program for 5 mins.
- Consider the following:
- Where does it fall on the spectrum?
(tutoring, interactive, or experimenting)
- Would kids enjoy using it?
- What type of lesson/time of the day would you incorporate this app/program?

How to create one:
What technology would you like to have in your future classroom?
- Select a topic
- Pick out the main concept and generate a set of concepts associated with the main concept or topic
- Rank the concepts hierarchically, from most general (or most inclusive) to most specific (or least inclusive). Group the concepts that are related.
- Draw the concept map with concepts in ovals.
- Most general concepts at the top
- Intermediate concepts below
- Most specific concepts at the bottom
- More general concepts are normally connected to two or more specific concepts.
- Draw the lines connecting the concepts
- Draw the linking lines
- Write the linking words
- Revise as necessary
- iPads
- Laptops
- Document cameras
- Interactive whiteboards
- Responders
- e-Readers
Create a concept map based on a scientific concept (i.e. Oceans, simple machines, rainforests, dinosaurs, water cycle, weather, plants, insects, etc.)
- Show hierarchical arrangements & meaningful interconnectedness.
- Use concepts
- Use linking words (has, for, provides, found in, such as, etc.)
- Can be used to organize concepts and show how students are thinking
- Can be used for lesson planning, instruction, and assessment
